RBC Pumps USD$45,000 into Breds Treasure Beach

BREDS Treasure Beach is one of only 36 organisations selected worldwide to receive a 2013 RBC Blue Water Project Leadership Grant

RBC recently announced a donation of US$45,000 to the BREDS Treasure Beach Foundation in support of its water conservation and solar project to improve their solar irrigation system to reduce water loss through evaporation by up to 50 per cent.

“I am very excited BREDs proposal was chosen for the RBC Leadership Grant. It will make a tremendous difference to our management of water at the sports park. We are always looking for ways to use our resources sustainably. This fund will help us towards achieving our aim” remarked Jason Henzell, chairman of the BREDS Treasure Beach Foundation.

“Water is our most precious natural resource, and we know that industry, government, business and individuals can all play a part in protecting urban water,” said Barrington Watson, RBC’s market head of business banking. “We are pleased to help the BREDS Treasure Beach Foundation contribute to a more swimmable, drinkable and fishable world for generations to come.”

The funds will allow BREDS to install batteries to store solar energy that can be used during daylight hours to reduce water loss through evaporation during irrigation by up to 50 per cent. BREDS will also increase its water storage capacity to collect rain water. Children from 11 primary schools will get the opportunity to learn about water conservation and the importance of reducing litter and keeping their environment green.

RBC Blue Water Project Leadership Grants fund programmes in towns with populations of more than 10,000 people that focus on:

Improving urban water quality;

Improving management of urban storm and rainwater such as building awareness about low-impact design or the use of natural systems to control storm or rainwater;

The efficient use of water in towns and cities; or

Protecting and restoring urban waterways.

This year, RBC has committed $2.3 million in Leadership and Community Action Grants globally, to 123 organisations that are committed to addressing urban water issues, and protecting water in towns and cities.

BREDS Treasure Beach Foundation is one of two leadership grants given in the Caribbean in 2013.
